Townsville to Eungella

The second segment of the journey south today and a day of big contrasts.
We started the day at Billabong Sanctuary just south of Townsville – an Australian wildlife experience it called itself – but it was a chance to see a lot of Australian animals close up. The local kangaroos had just invited themselves in and wandered around the sanctuary and helped themselves to food but there were a number of koalas in the enclosure and the chance to cuddle them which Jean could not resist. In addition we finally saw the cassowary that we had unsuccessfully searched the rainforest for the previous day.
Our second stop was at Bowen – a smallish coastal town whose most recent claim to fame turned out to be being the location for the film Australia with Nicole Kidman etc. We walked down the rundown pier which those who have seen the film would have recognised as being the one which went up in flames….and found a number of swallows nesting at the end – they are very similar to the ones at home but have another lovely local name - Welcome Swallows.
Finally we ended the day at Eungella – after another drive up into mist covered mountains and of which more tomorrow – but the trees around the lodge where we are staying were full of Sulpur Crested Cockatoos. We walked down to the river and saw Duck Billed Platypus swimming around – photos for the blog tomorrow hopefully but a creature that I had always wanted to see.
